Stakeholders Meet on Voter Education and Registration

| More

23 Sep 2011, Various Districts

Our program about Youth on Voting Rights and Voter Registration is all set to kick off. Recently, in all our Strategic Locations, coordination meeting was accomplished with different stakeholders with an aim to share our ideas and get feedback and suggestions on how to go together in implementation. Government Officers, Political leaders, Campus chief, Media Persons and Civil Society Members joined the meeting.

According to the data of District Election Office (DEO), in Kailali almost 1, 12,000 people have not Registerd their
name in voter list in Far Western Region. And the sad part is, most of them are Youth, Dalits and Freed Kamaiyas. Likewise, in Dang, Dhanusha and Kaski only 53.44 % , 63% , 62 % people respectively has enrolled their name list in voter registration. Out of which participation of youth is excessively low.

Coordination Meeting
According to the representatives of DAO (District Administration Office) of Kailali,
the reason behind, most of them did not register their name in voter list is, they do not have Nepali citizenship. Also, some of the causes behind low percentage of registered voter's list are frustration because of political situation, lack of awareness or interest about voter education. It was suggested that Voter Education Program should be started and run in High Schools where students are between the age group of 16-19.Likewise the representative from District Administration Office, Dang also informed that government intends to make National Identity card using the data of Election Commission.

Stakeholders point out that youth might be frustrated about the political situation of the country; hence they show lack of interest in registering their name. They clarified that registration process is not only concerned with the casting vote during election but it is the preliminary process to make the digital National Identity of Citizenship. Further more, DAO from Dhangadhi also urged that Voter Registration is a democratic process and one of the crucial responsibilities of the entire citizen especially "Youth"
