Generation Dialogues, Youth in Politics:Nepal

A Youth Initiative publication ‘Generation Dialogues – Youth in Politics: Nepal’ is a book based on the research/study on youth in politics in Nepal. The distance and relation between youth and politics in Nepal has been discussed in number of ways throughout the book. Three different sections in book are focused on different aspects of Nepali youth, their aspirations and motivations.
The first section of the book is concentrated on general perception of youth in society and how it was built up during the last few decades. First and second chapters in second section of the book are totally on student politics in Nepali academic institutions and national politics. The third chapter in second section discusses about Free Student Unions and some of the major mainstream political parties. The third but the most crucial section of the book talks on beyond the student activism. It, at first, shows how the Nepali youth get involved and engaged in the mainstream politics. And consequently, it demonstrates the some major instances of youth involvement in politics.
The book has come up with two distinct and apparently contradictory conclusions of youth in politics in Nepal. One is positive (ideal) and the next is negative (realistic, in some way). The discussion in book is rather concentrated on how both of these conclusions are genuinely created and lack the clear explanations.
Generation Dialogues was launched in Kathmandu on 2 April 2010 by Youth Initiative. Journalist Yubraj Ghimire, Constitution Assembly Member/Political Analyst Hari Roka and student leader Ram Kumari Jhankri shared their comments about the book. ‘Youth in politics in Nepal has been discussed in various dimensions’, Journalist Ghimire said, ‘I think it’s a first step made in Nepali social science sector on this issue.’ While commenting on the book, he added, ‘this book is an initiation for further discussion on Nepali youth and politics.’
CA member Roka said that youth were and are the vibrant force in Nepali politics and this book had come up with the pictures of different time and upheavals in Nepali politics. Unlike other commentators, student leader Jhankri said that society shouldn’t expect too much from youth since they are still not being able to have access in national decision making level.
Making remarks on the idea of Youth Initiative’s publication president Prakash Pyakurel said that having the background of working with youth wings and student unions since 2002, it was a high time to conduct a study about youth in politics and finally the research book has come out. He also said, ‘to cover the wide range of participation in the discussion, the book will be published in Nepali too.’
The writers of the book Bhoj Raj Poudel and Pieter De Schepper had done the research/study on the issues before sitting to write this book.
